(Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators will try to slow down Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals tonight, when the teams meet in D.C. for the finale of a home-and-home series at the Verizon Center.
Neither the Sens nor the Caps played a great deal of defense Saturday night in Ottawa, as Washington posted an 8-6 decision at Scotiabank Place. Ovechkin recorded the first five-point game of his career, notching four goals and an assist to lead the Capitals to the wild win.
Ovechkin has notched a point in six straight games and has seven goals and three assists during the tear. The Russian superstar is second in the NHL this year with 30 goals, as he trails only countryman Ilya Kovalchuk, who has notched 32 markers for the Atlanta Thrashers.
Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom each had a goal and two assists for the Capitals, who had dropped four of their last five tilts before the win over Ottawa.
Michael Nylander scored twice and Mike Green collected two helpers, while Olaf Kolzig won despite allowing six goals on 22 shots.
The Senators are first in the East with 54 points, while Washington is second from the bottom in the conference with 35. However, the Capitals are 2-0 against Ottawa this year and have won five of the last seven meetings between the clubs.
Mike Fisher registered the first hat trick of his career and Daniel Alfredsson had two goals and an assist for Ottawa, which had a three-game winning streak halted.
Wade Redden had three assists and Dany Heatley chipped in two helpers, while Martin Gerber surrendered seven goals on 29 shots.
Jason Spezza notched a goal in the loss to extend his points streak to 10 games. He has nine goals and 11 assists during the run, which is currently the second longest streak in the NHL behind New York Ranger Scott Gomez's 12- gamer.
The Capitals are just 7-10-1 as the host club this year, while Ottawa is 13-3-2 as the visiting team.
