Ducks visit St. Louis; still awaiting Selanne's debut

Fri 1st, February 2008

(Sports Network) - The Ducks are hoping the return of Teemu Selanne can spark a similar turnaround as when Scott Niedermayer rejoined the club in mid- December. Anaheim will hope to have Selanne on the ice when it tries to halt a four-game losing streak tonight at St. Louis' Scottrade Center.

Anaheim's skid has come on the heels of a season-high six straight wins and has the club three points behind first-place San Jose and Dallas in the Pacific Division. The Ducks' losing ways continued on Wednesday with a 5-1 setback in Minnesota.

Leading-scorer Corey Perry netted his 27th goal of the season for the Ducks, who have been outscored 15-5 during their season-long tying slump. Jean- Sebastian Giguere allowed three goals on 11 shots before being pulled midway through the second frame. Jonas Hiller stopped 10-of-12 shots faced the rest of the way.

The Ducks, though, signed Selanne for the rest of the season on Monday. He has been skating with the club and has joined them on their franchise-record nine- game road trip that included a game in Los Angeles prior to the All-Star break. It is unknown if he will dress tonight after not playing in Wednesday's game.

Selanne led the team with 48 goals last year and added 46 assists for 94 points en route to helping lead Anaheim to the Stanley Cup Championship. His return should boost the Ducks' struggling offense.

He is the second major contributor from last season to join the Ducks late in the season. Niedermayer, last year's Conn Smythe Trophy winner, returned to the ice on December 16 and Anaheim went 12-2-2 in his first 16 games back with the team before this four-game slide.

Anaheim has dropped the first two tests of its current nine-game trip and is 11-14-2 on the road this year.

Meanwhile, St. Louis snapped a seven-game losing streak (0-5-2) on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over Toronto. Keith Tkachuk posted his first multi-goal game of the season, scoring twice in the win.

David Backes tallied a goal and an assist and Manny Legace finished the game with 23 saves for the Blues. Legace was 0-3-2 in his previous six starts and won for the first time since January 10.

Former Duck Paul Kariya hasn't scored in St. Louis' last eight games, but has an assist in three straight tests and 10 helpers in his last nine contests. Kariya, taken fourth overall by Anaheim in the 1993 draft, has three goals and eight assists in 11 career games versus the Ducks.

St. Louis kicks off a three-game homestand tonight and is 14-8-4 as the host this year. The Blues will also host Colorado and Tampa Bay on this stand.

Tonight is the second of four meetings between the two teams this season, with St. Louis winning the first one at home, 4-2, on October 23. Kariya had a goal and three assists while Tkachuk added a goal and two helpers.

Anaheim, though, has still won six of the last eight meetings in the series and three of the last four in St. Louis.

This will also be the first meeting of the season between the clubs since Anaheim traded Andy McDonald to St. Louis for Doug Weight, a prospect and a draft pick.
