Stars take Western Canadian trip to Edmonton

Fri 1st, February 2008

(Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars continue their tour of western Canada tonight, as they pay a visit to Edmonton's Rexall Place to take on the struggling Oilers.

Dallas began this three-game trek through Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over the Canucks. Mike Modano posted a goal and an assist to pace the Stars, while Marty Turco made 29 saves.

Stephane Robidas, Steve Ott and Trevor Daley also scored for Dallas, which halted a two-game skid and won for the fourth time in its last six overall. The Stars are currently tied with San Jose for first place in the Pacific Division with 63 points, but a point tonight would give Dallas first place all on its own as the Sharks are idle.

Sergei Zubov missed his fifth straight game due to groin and foot injuries. Zubov is second on the team with 31 assists and is week-to-week.

However, forward Jere Lehtinen, who has missed 33 straight games because of a sports hernia, has been practicing with the club and is getting closer to returning, possibly tonight.

Dallas is 14-11-3 on the road this year and will be in Calgary on Saturday.

The Oilers have lost five of their last seven and were shut out, 3-0, by the Sharks in their most recent test on Tuesday. Edmonton managed to fire just 13 shots on San Jose netminder Evgeni Nabokov in the setback.

Mathieu Garon made 36 saves on 38 shots, but the Oilers offense was nonexistent. Shawn Horcoff, Edmonton's lone All-Star representative last weekend, was a minus-two in 23 minutes and 13 seconds of ice time.

Sheldon Souray was absent for the game due to a left shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. Souray aggravated an existing shoulder problem in Edmonton's January 24 game against the Florida Panthers.

Souray originally suffered a separated left shoulder on October 13 in a fight with Vancouver's Byron Ritchie and missed nearly two months of action.

The 31-year-old blueliner was signed to a lucrative five-year deal this past offseason, but has only three goals and 10 points in 26 games this year.

Edmonton began a four-game homestand on Tuesday and is 12-13-1 as the host this season.

The Stars have won four straight and seven of their last eight against the Oilers, including two meetings so far this season. Edmonton has played Dallas tough though, dropping a December 10 meeting in overtime before falling in a shootout on December 18.

Dallas has also won six straight in Edmonton.
