Chimera completes Blue Jackets' comeback over Canucks in OT

Sat 1st, March 2008

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Jason Chimera scored the game-winner 1:07 into overtime, as the Columbus Blue Jackets overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, at General Motors Place.

Nikolai Zherdev charged into the offensive zone, outraced two Vancouver defenders on the right wing boards and fired a pass in front of the net, where Chimera charged in and rammed the puck home for the game-winner.

Rick Nash recorded a goal and an assist for Columbus, which has won three of its last four. Andrew Murray also scored for the Blue Jackets, and Pascal Leclaire stopped 21-of-23 shots to earn the victory.

Ryan Shannon and Sami Salo each scored for Vancouver, which has lost two straight after a four-game winning streak. Roberto Luongo made 30 saves in the loss.

Shannon gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead with 7:22 left in the first period, firing a wrister from the left circle that beat Leclaire through the pads.

Salo put Vancouver up by two with 9:02 to go in the second, blasting a slap shot from the right point through a screen and past Leclaire for his fifth tally of the season.

The Blue Jackets put 21 shots on goal through two periods, but Luongo was outstanding in the cage and didn't allow a single puck to slip through.

Columbus finally broke through 5:18 into the third period, when Dick Tarnstrom's wrister from the point was deflected by Murray up and over Luongo to cut the Vancouver lead to one.

Just 1:10 later, Nash picked up a loose puck at center ice, charged into the Vancouver zone one-on-one with Luongo, and flipped a backhander over Luongo's outstretched glove to tie the game, 2-2.

Vancouver appeared to take the lead when Henrik Sedin tipped in a shot from the point on the power play with 11 minutes left, but the officials waved the goal off when it was ruled he batted the puck with a high stick.
