Ellis, Preds stop Stars

Sat 1st, March 2008

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Dan Ellis made 24 saves as the Nashville Predators cooled off the Dallas Stars with a 3-1 win at American Airlines Center.

David Legwand, Jordin Tootoo and J.P. Dumont each scored third-period goals for the Predators, who had lost four of five coming into the game.

Nashville has 74 points and is tied with Colorado for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Colorado has 34 wins, compared to 33 for Nashville, and holds the tiebreaker.

"We played a great defensive game, it was something we worked on the past two days in practice," Ellis said.

Mike Ribeiro scored the lone goal while Marty Turco stopped 25 shots in the loss for Dallas, which had won six of seven coming into the game.

Dallas, with 87 points, sits atop the Pacific Division and trails Detroit by three points for first place overall in the NHL.

"Emotionally, we have been through a lot over the past week and those guys are battling hard to get in the playoffs," Ribeiro said. "We'll get back to work on Monday with practice and get our focus back for our next game."

The game was scoreless after two periods, but Nashville took a 1-0 lead just 47 seconds into the final frame as Legwand's wrister from the left circle beat Turco to the glove side.

The Predators made it a 2-0 game at the 7:53 mark of the third. Ville Koistinen caused a turnover deep in the Dallas end and from the low right boards sent the puck to the right circle where Tootoo swept it into the net.

The Stars answered just 30 seconds later as Ribeiro took the puck down the right wing, made a move to get into the slot and snapped a wrister between the pads of Ellis.

However, Nashville again made it a two-goal game just 23 seconds later. On a 2-on-1 break, Jason Arnott made a pass from the right side to the left where Dumont slammed the puck home for his 24th goal of the season.

Dallas got Turco out of the net for the extra attacker in the final minutes of the game, but were unable to score.

There was a total of 18 shots in the first period, 11 from Nashville, but none got past the goaltenders.

The second period was also a scoreless affair as Ellis made eight saves and Turco stopped six shots.
