Rangers hope to continue success versus Flyers

Sun 2nd, March 2008

(Sports Network) - The New York Rangers will try for their first four-game winning streak in over three months when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

New York has won three in a row for the fifth time this year but hasn't captured four straight wins since November 8-17. The Rangers' current run has them seventh in the Eastern Conference with 74 points, two back of Boston.

The Rangers are also third in the Atlantic Division, six points shy of front- running New Jersey and a point ahead of fourth-place Philadelphia. The Flyers stand eighth in the East.

New York has outscored its opponents 13-5 over its current winning run, including Thursday's 4-2 victory in Carolina. Chris Drury and Brendan Shanahan each posted a goal to extend their respective point streaks.

Drury, third on the Rangers with 47 points this year, has four goals and four assists over a seven-game point streak, while Shanahan has four goals and three helpers over his six-game run. Both Drury and Shanahan are tied for the team lead in goals with 21.

Sean Avery and Brandon Dubinsky each lit the lamp for the Rangers, who have won six of their last eight games. Henrik Lundqvist got the win, as he stopped 26-of-28 shots.

The Blueshirts have won three in a row at home and are 20-13-0 at Madison Square Garden this season.

New York has had a lot of success over the Flyers as of late. The Rangers are 4-1-0 in five meetings so far this year and have also won nine of 11 and 10 of their last 13 games against Philadelphia. New York has also won three of five and four of the last seven as the host in the series.

New York has shutout the Flyers three times this season, with backup netminder Steve Valiquette getting the last two, the first shutouts of his career.

The Flyers, though, have found their stride, as they have ripped off three straight wins following a disastrous 10-game losing streak. Philadelphia snapped the skid with a shootout win in Buffalo on Monday, then knocked off Ottawa on Thursday before posting a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders yesterday afternoon.

Mike Knuble picked up a goal and two assists, giving him three goals and four helpers over Philadelphia's winning streak. Jeff Carter and Scottie Upshall each added a goal and a helper.

Braydon Coburn also tallied for the Flyers, while Martin Biron stopped 33 shots to pick up the win.

Philadelphia plays the second portion of consecutive road games today and is 19-13-1 as the visitor this season.
