Canadiens double up Coyotes

Fri 7th, March 2008

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Andrei Markov broke a deadlock midway through the third period, and the Montreal Canadiens went on to beat the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-2.

Phoenix has lost six games and tied three others against the Canadiens since a 4-2 victory December 9, 1998. This was the first meeting between the teams since Phoenix lost 5-2 at Montreal on Dec. 13, 2005.

Tomas Plekanec, Saku Koivu and Sergei Kostitsyn all tallied for Montreal, which has won four of its last five games and is now tied with Pittsburgh for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with 83 points. The Penguins lost to the Florida Panthers, 5-2, on Thursday.

Alex Kovalev added three assists, Chris Higgins had a pair of helpers and Carey Price stopped 37-of-39 shots for the Canadiens.

Shane Doan and Zbynek Michalek lit the lamp, while Mikael Tellqvist made 16 saves for Phoenix, which has dropped two of three. The Coyotes have not reached the postseason since 2002, and sit in 10th place in the Western Conference -- three points behind Vancouver and Nashville for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Michalek broke a 1-1 tie early in the third when his shot from the low right circle beat a screened Price, as the puck sailed over the netminder's shoulder at 3:54.

The Habs, however, tied the game at two when Koivu knocked home a loose puck in the crease at 6:38 following a failed one-timer by Higgins.

Montreal then pulled ahead a short time later on the power play, as Markov wristed a feed from Kovalev past the skate of Tellqvist and into the low left corner of the net at 10:07.

Kostitsyn added the final tally with just 1:41 left, and as part of a 2-on-1 following a Phoenix turnover in the neutral zone.

The Coyotes posted 14 shots on goal in the first period, but couldn't solve Price, while Tellqvist turned aside all five Habs' chances at the other end.

Montreal, however, grabbed the lead in the second period. The marker came following a flurry of activity in the offensive zone, and ended as Plekanec faked a pass, then slipped the puck past Tellqvist from the low right circle at 6:03.

Phoenix tied it up on the power play at 10:03, as Doan stationed himself to the side of the crease and deflected a shot by Ed Jovanovski just under the crossbar.
