Ersberg leads Kings past Sens

Fri 7th, March 2008

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Erik Ersberg stopped 40 shots -- posting his first career win, and a shutout in just his third career start -- as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Ottawa Senators, 2-0, at Staples Center.

The Kings learned Wednesday that starting goaltender Jason LaBarbera, sidelined since February 18, will miss the rest of the season after undergoing sports hernia surgery. Veteran Dan Cloutier and the Swedish rookie Ersberg will continue to share netminding duties.

"It feels great to have the guys working so hard. It was my first win, so it feels very good," Ersberg said afterward. "I don't know (who will get the first phone call). We'll see. Everybody is sleeping back home, so I guess it will be somebody over here (in the states)."

Alex Frolov and Patrick O'Sullivan tallied for the Kings, who snapped a five- game skid. The team had just one point on a recently completed four-game road trip, but continued its domination at home against the Senators. Ottawa's lone win at Los Angeles came January 11, 2000, in a 4-3 victory.

Martin Gerber turned aside 30 shots for the Senators, who are 1-6-1 in their last eight games. They have dropped a season-high five in a row on the road, their longest such skid since March 17-April 2, 2000.

The loss drops Ottawa (81 points) to fifth in the Eastern Conference playoff race, one point behind the fourth-place New Jersey Devils. The Senators are second in the Northeast Division, as they trail first-place Montreal by two points.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the first period, though Ottawa outshot Los Angeles, 16-8, in the front 20 minutes.

Frolov broke the deadlock at 8:10 of the second period, as he turned and fired from the mid-slot, slipping the puck past Gerber between the pad and the right post.

The goal -- Frolov's 21st of the campaign -- came while Mike Fisher was off for tripping.

Ottawa had a goal disallowed late in the third period, and O'Sullivan added an empty-net tally with 4.3 seconds remaining to ice the win.

"We didn't come out the right way," said Gerber. "We worked hard in the third. We had our chances, but we couldn't get one through."

Game Notes

The Sens are 1-9-0 in LA in their history...Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson missed his second consecutive game, after sitting out Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks. The Kings have used 10 different goalies since the start of the season, including Ersberg.
