Streaking Sharks head to Chicago

Fri 7th, March 2008

(Sports Network) - The Sharks have won a season-high seven games in a row and take their act on the road tonight, as they visit the United Center to take on the Chicago Blackhawks, a club San Jose has defeated in 10 straight meetings.

The Sharks are on their first seven-game win streak since reeling off eight straight victories from April 3-15, 2006. San Jose, which begins a three-game road trip tonight, has also won its last five as the visitor.

The Sharks extended their winning streak on Wednesday, besting Ottawa, 3-2, in overtime. Patrick Marleau scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:55 remaining in overtime.

In the extra session, Joe Pavelski threw the puck out from behind the goal to Marleau, who shoveled it past Martin Gerber for the win.

Pavelski extended his point streak to five games (3 goals, 3 assists), while Jonathan Cheechoo scored the game-tying goal late in the third period. After struggling through most of the season, Cheechoo has six goals in his last eight tests to give him 21 on the season.

Brian Campbell assisted on one of Marleau's tallies, giving him a career-high tying 42 helpers on the season and four assists in five games with the Sharks. Campbell also posted 42 assists last season.

Evgeni Nabokov made 17 saves to pick up his 37th win of the season, tying his career high set during the 2001-02 campaign.

The win vaulted the Sharks past Anaheim for second in the Pacific Division with 84 points, and San Jose is three points back of first-place Dallas.

San Jose is 22-8-3 on the road this year and will also visit Minnesota and Nashville on this trip.

The Sharks have won all three of their matchups against the Blackhawks this season, and tonight is the final meeting of the 2007-08 campaign between the two clubs. In addition to winning 10 in a row overall against Chicago, San Jose has also won four straight and five of its last six at the Windy City.

The Blackhawks haven't bested the Sharks since a 6-3 home win on October 7, 2005.

Former Blackhawk and current Shark Jeremy Roenick has missed the last two games due to the flu and is questionable for tonight.

Chicago has also been rolling as of late as it continues to try and sneak into the postseason. The Blackhawks have won three in a row after defeating the Ducks, 3-0, on Wednesday.

Netminder Corey Crawford stopped all 19 shots faced for his first career shutout in what was just his second ever NHL start. Back spasms have forced regular starting netminder Nikolai Khabibulin to the sidelines, while Patrick Lalime was also riding the bench for the night after he played the last six games.

Crawford, who had made two previous appearances this year in relief, made his first NHL start in February of 2006, allowing five goals in an overtime loss to St. Louis.

Dustin Byfuglien and Cam Barker each had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Sharp was also credited with an empty-net tally for his team-leading 33rd goal of the season. Patrick Kane added a pair of assists, as Chicago improved to 9-3-0 in its last 12 games.

The Blackhawks now sit 11th in the West, just four points behind Vancouver and Nashville for the last playoff spots in the conference.

The Blackhawks began a three-game homestand on Wednesday and have won their last five at the United Center. Chicago is 18-13-1 as the hosts this year and concludes its residency on Sunday versus Edmonton.
