(Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils and Montreal Canadiens will square off with the Eastern Conference lead on the line tonight, as the clubs battle at the Bell Centre in Quebec.
The Devils have 86 points and are just one ahead of Montreal for the top seed in the East. However, both teams are still hanging onto slim leads in their respective divisions, as New Jersey is just one point ahead of Pittsburgh in the Atlantic and the Habs are two in front of Ottawa for the Northeast lead. The Penguins have tonight off, while the Senators play a home test against Boston.
New Jersey posted two of its wins during the three-game streak against Toronto and the Devils are coming off Saturday's road victory over the Maple Leafs. Zach Parise scored both goals, including the game-winner with 48.8 seconds remaining, as New Jersey edged past Toronto, 2-1, at Air Canada Centre.
Jamie Langenbrunner added a pair of assists, and Martin Brodeur was spectacular in net, turning aside 42 shots as New Jersey improved to 12-3-3 in its last 18 games.
The Devils have allowed two goals or fewer in 10 of the last 11 contests and Brodeur has won three straight starts after losing his previous three outings.
New Jersey is playing the second portion of a four-game road trip tonight. The Devils have won four of their last six away from the Garden State and are 18-11-5 as the road club this year.
The Canadiens closed a four-game tour of the Pacific Division this Sunday in Anaheim and went 2-2-0 on the swing. The Ducks posted a 3-1 decision over Montreal, as Chris Kunitz and Samuel Pahlsson tallied 33 seconds apart in the third period to lift Anaheim to the 3-1 decision at the Honda Center.
Alex Kovalev scored for the Canadiens, who had won five of six coming into Sunday's contest in Southern California.
Carey Price allowed all three goals on 37 shots in the loss and is 4-2-0 since the Canadiens traded former starting goaltender Cristobal Huet to Washington at the trade deadline. The 20-year-old backstop is 16-11-3 with a .913 save percentage and 2.77 goals against average in 32 games during his rookie season.
Tonight marks the opener of a four-game homestand for the Canadiens, who will also host Ottawa, the New York Islanders and St. Louis during the residency. Montreal is just 16-12-5 as the hosts this season, but have won four of six and eight of its last 12 tests at the Bell Centre.
Montreal is 2-1 against the Devils this season, but Jersey has still taken nine of the last 11 games in the series. The Devils have also come out on top in five of eight and six of their previous 10 stops at the Bell Centre.
