Flyers, Maple Leafs open home-and-home set in Toronto

Tue 11th, March 2008

(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers will aim for their third consecutive victory tonight when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre for the opener of a home-and-home series.

The Flyers are coming off back-to-back home wins over Tampa Bay and the New York Islanders and have won five of their last seven outings.

Philadelphia has 78 points and is currently holding on to the eighth and final playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers are three points ahead of Buffalo.

The Flyers earned their most recent victory Saturday night against the visiting Islanders. Scott Hartnell scored a pair of power-play goals and Philadelphia scored four times with the man advantage in the 4-1 triumph at Wachovia Center.

Daniel Briere and Jeff Carter also lit the lamp for the Flyers, while Braydon Coburn and Kimmo Timonen each had three assists in the win.

The Flyers' power play went 4-for-7 in the game.

Martin Biron made 32 saves to post his second straight victory since giving up five goals on just 18 shots in last Tuesday's 5-2 home loss to Buffalo.

Beginning with tonight's test, the Flyers are playing three of their next four games on the road with the exception being the finale of this home-and-home on Wednesday.

Philadelphia has a solid 19-13-2 record as the visiting club this year, but has dropped five of its last seven on the road.

The Maple Leafs come into tonight's test as the 13th seed in the East and they're eight points behind the Flyers for the conference's final playoff berth.

Toronto has lost three of its last five contests and was handed a close setback Saturday by the visiting New Jersey Devils. Zach Parise scored both goals, including the game-winner with 48.8 seconds remaining, as New Jersey edged past the Leafs, 2-1.

Mats Sundin had the lone tally for the Leafs, who came to Saturday's test with a 5-1-1 mark in their previous seven games. Vesa Toskala made 28 saves in the loss for Toronto.

Toronto is 16-14-5 as the hosts this year and has dropped its last two tests on home ice.

Philadelphia is 2-0 against the Leafs this season, but Toronto has still taken eight of the last 11 encounters. The Flyers have dropped three of five at Air Canada Centre, but have also won five of their previous eight games in Toronto.
