(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings put a three-game win streak on the line as the Western Conference front-runners continue their homestand with tonight's clash with the rival Chicago Blackhawks.
Detroit has gotten itself back on track after losing 10 times during an 11- game stretch to close out the month of February, as the club has ripped off a trio of wins to start off March. The latest triumph came at the expense of fellow Central Division member Nashville, which suffered a 4-3 defeat to the Red Wings Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.
The Wings were buoyed by the return of captain Niklas Lidstrom, as the five- time Norris Trophy winner assisted on two of the team's goals in his first action since February 18. The veteran defenseman had sat out six consecutive games due to a sprained right knee.
Johan Franzen scored twice on the power play for Detroit, while Brad Stuart and Jiri Hudler also notched goals in the win.
Pavel Datsyuk assisted on one of Franzen's tallies to extend his scoring streak to six games. The standout center has four goals and three helpers during the run.
The Red Wings have won the first two tests of a current five-game homestand and have built a stellar 23-8-2 home mark on the season. Detroit had lost four in a row at Joe Louis Arena prior to its surge.
Detroit has an NHL-best 96 points for the year and leads Dallas by seven in the battle for the top seed in the West.
Chicago has lost two straight following a three-game win streak and lost a wild overtime contest to visiting Edmonton on Sunday. Andrew Cogliano's second goal of the game came with 1:59 remaining in the extra session and lifted the Oilers to a 6-5 victory.
Robert Lang paced the Blackhawks offensively with a goal and two assists, while Andrew Ladd set up two of Chicago's scores on the afternoon. Patrick Lalime had a rough day in goal, however, managing to stop just 19 of the 25 shots he faced.
While the Blackhawks appear to be a longshot to reach the postseason, they've had great success when facing the powerful Red Wings during this campaign. Chicago has won four of the five 2007-08 meetings between the teams and came out with victories in both matchups that took place in the Motor City.
Prior to those two wins, the Blackhawks had lost in 11 of their 12 most recent appearances at Joe Louis Arena.
