(Sports Network) - A pair of struggling Northeast Division members will go head-to-head tonight at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place, where the Senators host the Boston Bruins in a key clash between playoff hopefuls.
Ottawa returns home off a four-game West Coast road trip in which the club lost the first three tests before rebounding for a 4-2 victory over Phoenix on Saturday. Mike Fisher had a pair of goals and the Senators scored twice in the third period to break open a tie game.
Dany Heatley netted the go-ahead marker for the Sens less than two minutes into the final period, while Antoine Vermette contributed a goal and an assist to the winning effort. Martin Gerber was sharp between the pipes, stopping 33 of the 35 shots he faced.
Ottawa, which is just 2-5-1 over its last eight games, currently trails Montreal by two points in the battle for first place in the Northeast. The Senators will visit the Canadiens on Thursday.
The Senators played Saturday's contest without captain and leading scorer Daniel Alfredsson, who has sat out three straight games due to back spasms and is doubtful to return for this evening's tilt. The All-Star forward has tallied 37 goals and 79 points on the season.
Boston comes in having dropped four of its five most recent outings, although the team did notch a point in two of those defeats. The Bruins were hard-luck losers their last time out, falling 1-0 in a shootout to the surging New York Rangers Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
Alex Auld turned aside 35 shots for Boston through regulation and overtime but was beaten by Nigel Dawes in the second round of the shootout for a 1-0 New York advantage. Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist then stopped Phil Kessel and David Krejci on successive tries to preserve the victory.
Boston was missing star defenseman Zdeno Chara due to an undisclosed injury that could keep the towering veteran out of the lineup again tonight.
The Bruins presently occupy the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race and hold a two-point edge on Philadelphia for that spot.
Tonight's showdown marks the sixth meeting of the 2007-08 campaign between these teams. Ottawa won the first three encounters and Boston the two latest matchups, including a 4-1 decision at Scotiabank Place on January 31.
