(Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks' franchise-record winning streak has them in position to take over first place in the Pacific Division. The team will try to do just that tonight, when it visits the Nashville Predators and the Sommet Center.
The Sharks have won nine in a row after Sunday's 3-2 shootout victory over Minnesota, surpassing the club's previous record eight-game winning run set from April 3-15, 2006.
The win kept San Jose one point behind Dallas in the Pacific Division after the Stars downed Colorado on Sunday. However, the Sharks have played three fewer games than Dallas on the season and will make up one of those tests tonight, as the Stars are idle.
Patrick Marleau scored the game-winning goal in the third round of the shootout on Sunday for San Jose, while Evgeni Nabokov made 21 saves for his league-leading 39th win of the season. Tomas Plihal scored on a penalty shot and Milan Michalek also scored in regulation.
Joe Thornton was held without a point, though he still enjoyed a tremendous week. Thornton earned NHL Third Star honors on Monday after posting two goals and five assists in four games last week.
The Sharks, who haven't lost since February 20 in New Jersey, have also won seven straight on the road and are 24-8-3 as the visiting club this season.
San Jose will try for a season sweep of the Predators tonight. The Sharks have outscored Nashville 12-5 in three games this year, with Thornton posting seven assists against the Predators. Michalek has two goals and four assists against Nashville this year and Nabokov has won all three games, including a 3-0 shutout victory on October 20.
The Sharks have won six of their last nine matchups versus the Preds, but their win in Nashville on December 29 halted a seven-game series road losing streak.
Nashville is two points out of a playoff spot, as it trails Vancouver and Colorado for the seventh and eighth positions, respectively. The Preds fell behind big versus Detroit on Sunday and couldn't erase a four-goal deficit in a 4-3 setback in Motown.
Martin Erat, Shea Weber and Jordin Tootoo all netted third-period goals for Nashville, with Tootoo's coming with 61 seconds left in regulation. Chris Mason allowed four goals on 33 shots as the Predators finished a season-long six-game road trip at 3-3-0.
Scott Nichol had an assist in the loss to match a career-high in points for a season with 18 (10 goals, 8 assists). Nichol had seven goals and 11 helpers with Chicago in 2003-04.
Predators center David Legwand did not play on Sunday due to a foot injury that has him day-to-day.
Nashville is 20-10-4 at home this year and will host Los Angeles on Thursday.
