Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Radim Vrbata scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Phoenix Coyotes downed the Anaheim Ducks, 3-2, at Jobing.com Arena.
In the second round of the shootout, Vrbata skated in on net and lifted a backhander into the left corner.
Chris Pronger had the last chance for Anaheim, but his slap shot went over the right corner of the net as the Coyotes held on for the win.
Shane Doan and Keith Yandle each had a goal for the Coyotes, who had dropped three of four coming in. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 35 shots in the win.
Phoenix has won three straight shootout games against Anaheim.
Phoenix now has 75 points and trails Vancouver by five points for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with 12 games to play.
Todd Marchant and Ryan Getzlaf each had a goal while Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 37 shots in the loss for the Ducks, who have dropped three of their last four games.
Anaheim currently holds the fifth spot in the Western Conference and trails San Jose by four points for the Pacific Division lead.
The Ducks got on the scoreboard with just 1:22 left in the first period. Marchant flew into the zone down the right wing and from a sharp angle let fly with a backhander that squeezed past Bryzgalov for his seventh goal of the year.
Giguere stopped all 12 shots he faced in the first period.
Getzlaf made it a 2-0 game at the 7:17 mark of the second period with his 22nd goal of the season.
Phoenix cut the deficit in half with 3:43 left in the second period as Doan's slap shot from the top of the right circle beat Giguere over the glove.
A power play opportunity helped the Coyotes tie the game. Yandle received a pass in the high slot and cranked a big blast that beat Giguere through a screen with 8:33 left in the third.
The Ducks had a power-play for the final 1:57 of overtime, but were unable to convert and the game went to the shootout.
