Flames try to burn bright in Columbus

Tue 18th, March 2008

(Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames will continue their drive for the Northwest Division title tonight, when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets for a battle at Nationwide Arena.

The Flames are locked into a tight battle for first place in the always competitive Northwest Division. Minnesota leads the division with 86 points, while Calgary, Colorado and Vancouver each have 84 points.

Calgary ended a two-game slide on Sunday with a road victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Jarome Iginla posted his 45th goal of the season to lead the Flames to the 4-2 win at the United Center.

Adrian Aucoin, Kristian Huselius and Dion Phaneuf also tallied, and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 34-of-36 shots in the win.

Iginla was named the NHL's First Star for the week ending March 16. Calgary's captain led the league in scoring last week by posting eight points (5 goals, 3 assists) in four games. Iginla is third in the NHL this season in both goals and points (87).

Tonight marks the end of a four-game road trip for the Flames, who are 19-15-1 as the visiting team this year.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets' dreams of making their first-ever trip to the postseason are continuing to fade. Columbus has won two of its last three games, but is seven points out of a playoff spot with 10 games to play.

The Blue Jackets, who came into the league for the 2000-01 season, have set a franchise record for most points in a season with 75.

Columbus posted a 4-3 victory over the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist for a career-high three points to lift the Blue Jackets to the win at Nationwide Arena.

Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Nikolai Zherdev scored a goal apiece for the Blue Jackets. Fredrik Norrena made 43 saves for Columbus, which won despite being outshot 46-17.

The Blue Jackets are 18-11-7 as the host team this year and are wrapping up a five-game homestand tonight. Columbus has lost eight of its last 10 home contests.

The Flames are 2-1 against Columbus this season and have won four of the last six meetings between the clubs. The Blue Jackets have taken three of the previous four matchups at Nationwide Arena.
