Roenick's third-period tally the difference as Sharks top Ducks

Sat 22nd, March 2008

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Jeremy Roenick notched his ninth game-winner of the season, as the San Jose Sharks extended their lead in the Pacific Division with an impressive 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks at HP Pavilion.

Joe Thornton also scored for the Sharks, who have a recorded at least a point in a franchise record 15 consecutive games (14-0-1). Evgeni Nabokov made 12 saves to earn his league-leading 43rd win of the season.

"If we are going to do anything in the playoffs, tonight was the night we had to show how we can play," Roenick said.

The Sharks, with 99 points, hold a seven-point edge over Anaheim in the division. San Jose also trails idle Detroit by five points in the race for the top spot in the West as well as the President's Trophy for best overall record in the NHL.

Todd Marchant provided the lone offense for the Ducks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Jonas Hiller was masterful between the pipes, stopping 41-of-43 shots, including 16 in the third period, in a losing cause.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere was scheduled to start for the Ducks, but got injured before the game.

"We didn't execute tonight and they trapped us in the neutral ice and we kept turning the puck over and we didn't make any good decisions about puck management," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "The third period was tough. We started poorly when we went down two men for the second time in the game. The first time we defended the goal but this time they scored."

Anaheim is fourth in the Western Conference standings, three points ahead of idle Dallas.

Early in the third period, San Jose capitalized on a lengthy 5-on-3 power play to break a 1-1 tie. Roenick took a feed from Brian Campbell and whipped a shot from below the left circle that beat Hiller 72 seconds into the stanza.

The Sharks thoroughly dominated the final frame, outshooting the Ducks 17-0.

San Jose opened the scoring on Thornton's 21st goal of the season just 40 seconds into the game.

The Ducks tied the score at the 5:35 mark of the second. On a seemingly harmless 3-on-3 situation, Chris Kunitz skated down the left wing and threaded a cross-ice pass to Marchant at the right circle, who one-timed the disc past the outstretched left pad of Nabokov.

In the late stages of the middle frame, the Sharks had a 5-on-3 man advantage for a full two minutes, but failed to convert.
