(Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames will continue their quest for a Northwest Division crown tonight, as they visit the Colorado Avalanche and the Pepsi Center.
The Flames enter tonight's test a point behind Minnesota for first place in the division after defeating the Wild, 5-4, on Saturday. Calgary, which has a game in hand over Minnesota, is trying for its second division crown in three seasons after also winning the Northwest in 2005-06.
Jarome Iginla guided his team to victory over the weekend, posting his seventh career hat trick. Iginla has a team-high 48 goals and 91 points on the season, both ranked third in the NHL. He is also two goals shy of his second ever 50- goal season after netting a career-high 52 markers in 2001-02.
Dion Phaneuf posted a goal and two assists against the Wild for the Flames, who have won two straight and three of their last four games overall. Matthew Lombardi also scored, Anders Eriksson added two assists and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 29-of-33 shots to pick up the win.
Despite being in second place in the division, the Flames are just sixth overall in the West, a point back of Dallas and two ahead of Vancouver.
Calgary has lost four of its last six on the road, where it is 19-16-1 this season, and plays its next two at home.
Colorado has stumbled on the way to a four-game losing streak and is eighth overall in the West. The Avalanche are two points ahead of ninth-seeded Nashville and three ahead of Edmonton. The club also trails the Canucks by two points for the seventh spot.
The Avs lost a wild 7-5 contest against Edmonton on Saturday. The teams combined for seven goals in the final stanza, with goals by Ruslan Salei, Wojtek Wolski and Milan Hejduk early in the third erasing a three-goal deficit. However, the Avalanche fell behind only 18 seconds later and never recovered.
Hejduk also had an assist, Joe Sakic had a pair of helpers and Tyler Arnason and John-Michael Liles also scored in the loss. Jose Theodore had a disastrous outing for the Avs, allowing three goals on eight shots. Peter Budaj stopped 17-of-20 the rest of the way.
Colorado played its second straight game without ailing center Peter Forsberg, who remains sidelined with a groin injury. Forsberg has missed five of the last six games, while defenseman Adam Foote sat for the fifth time in seven games after aggravating a hip problem.
The Avalanche have won five of their last six at home and begin a three-game homestand tonight. Colorado next hosts Vancouver on Wednesday and is 23-12-2 at the Pepsi Center this year.
The Avalanche and Canucks wrap their eight-game season series tonight, a set that Colorado leads 4-3-0. The Avs have also won eight of 11 and nine of their last 13 versus the Flames and five of the last six as the host.
