Wild aim to hold off surging Oilers in Minnesota

Wed 26th, March 2008

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Wild will try to regain the top spot in the Northwest Division tonight, when they welcome the surging Edmonton Oilers to Xcel Energy Center.

Minnesota comes into tonight with 89 points and is one behind idle Calgary for the Northwest lead. The Flames took over the top spot Tuesday with a win over Vancouver.

This marks the second time in three days that the Wild and Oilers are facing each other, as tonight's test is the finale of a home-and-home series as well as the last regular-season meeting between the clubs. Edmonton posted a 5-3 victory Monday night at Rexall Place.

The Wild are 4-2-1 versus the Oilers this year and has still taken nine of the last 12 meetings between the clubs. Edmonton has also lost six straight, seven of eight and eight of its last 10 road games against the Wild.

The Oilers are making a late push for a playoff berth as they've won five of their last six games and are currently three points out of the final playoff spot in the West. Vancouver and Colorado, who play each other tonight, are tied for the conference's final two postseason berths.

Edmonton won its second straight contest on Monday as it disposed of the Wild behind a pair of goals by rookie Andrew Cogliano. Edmonton struck three times over the first 5:02 of the game en route to the home triumph.

Curtis Glencross, Dustin Penner and Kyle Brodziak also scored for the Oilers. Dwayne Roloson made 31 stops for Edmonton, which has also won eight of 10 and 12 of its last 15 games.

Sean Hill, Todd Fedoruk and Nick Schultz had the goals for Minnesota.

Niklas Backstrom allowed three goals on only 10 shots, while Josh Harding made 21 saves for the Wild, losers of five of six on the road.

Minnesota is 21-11-5 as the hosts this season, but despite winning its last two home tests the club has just three victories in its last eight in St. Paul.

The Oilers are just 16-17-4 as the visiting team, but have won two straight and four of their last five on the road.
