Bruins go for big home-and-home sweep of Maple Leafs

Thu 27th, March 2008

(Sports Network) - The Boston Bruins will aim for an important home-and-home sweep of the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight, when the clubs meet at TD Banknorth Garden.

The Bruins posted a decisive win in Toronto on Tuesday to help them hang on to the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. Boston has 86 points and is just two points ahead of Washington for the East's final playoff spot. The Capitals play tonight in Tampa.

Meanwhile, the Leafs' playoff hopes are fading quickly as the club is six points behind Boston with just five games remaining in the season. In fact, the Bruins can eliminate Toronto from postseason contention with a regulation win tonight.

Marco Sturm, David Krejci and Shawn Thornton each registered a goal and an assist and Tim Thomas was strong with 28 saves, as Boston pounded the Maple Leafs, 6-2, at Air Canada Centre.

Glen Murray, Phil Kessel, and Jeremy Reich also scored for Boston, which snapped a three-game winless streak.

Jason Blake and Alexei Ponikarovsky tallied for the Maple Leafs, who saw their three-game win streak halted.

Vesa Toskala allowed five goals on 29 shots in the loss.

Toronto has played its last five games without captain and leading scorer Mats Sundin, who is suffering from a groin injury. Sundin, who is first on Toronto in goals (32) and points (77) this season, practiced Wednesday and is questionable for tonight's test.

Sundin has two goals and five assists in six games against Boston this year.

The Maple Leafs have also been without forward Nik Antropov, the team's second-leading scorer, for the last four games. The big Russian has 26 goals and 26 assists this year and is also questionable for this evening's tilt.

Tonight's test marks the eighth and final meeting between the Bruins and Leafs this year and Boston is holding a 4-3 edge in the season series.

Boston has taken nine of the last 14 in the series, but the Maple Leafs have won two straight and three of their previous four tests in Beantown.

The Bruins are 19-15-4 as the host this year and have dropped four of their last six on home ice. Toronto has won its last six on the road and is 18-16-5 as the visiting team this year.
