Rangers try to end series in Jersey

Fri 18th, April 2008

(Sports Network) - The New York Rangers will try to clinch their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series tonight, when they visit the New Jersey Devils for Game 5 at Prudential Center.

The Blueshirts hold a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven series and have already won twice in this set on New Jersey's home ice. Including the regular season, the Rangers are 10-1-1 against the Devils this year and 5-0-1 in Newark.

New York extended its series' lead on Wednesday, as it posted a 5-3 decision at Madison Square Garden.

Marc Staal scored the game-winning goal with 3:13 remaining in regulation to lift the Rangers to the Game 4 victory and help the team move one step from reaching the conference semifinals.

Staal missed practice on Thursday to rest a sore ankle, but is expected to play tonight.

Scott Gomez had a pair of tallies, while Chris Drury and Martin Straka each added a goal and an assist for the Rangers.

Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves and improved to 9-8 lifetime in the NHL playoffs.

Meanwhile, Gomez continues to burn his former team in this series, posting a team-high six points (2 goals, 4 assists) in the four games. The 28-year-old Gomez won two Stanley Cup titles with New Jersey, but left to sign with Rangers in the offseason.

Patrik Elias scored twice, while Mike Mottau also lit the lamp for the Devils, who are in danger of getting bumped out in the opening round of the playoffs for the first time since losing to Philadelphia in the 2004 conference quarterfinals.

Martin Brodeur stopped 34-of-38 shots in defeat as his rough series continued. The 35-year-old goaltender has a lofty 2.97 goals against average and a .904 save percentage in the four games.

The Blueshirts have won three of the four all-time playoff series against New Jersey. The Devils only win came in a four-game sweep of New York in the 2006 conference quarterfinals.

The Devils were 25-14-2 in their inaugural season at the Prudential Center, while the Rangers struggled to a 17-14-10 mark as the visiting team.

If necessary, Game 6 of this series will be held Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
