Caps try to stay alive in Philadelphia

Mon 21st, April 2008

(Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals will try to stave off elimination once again tonight, when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wachovia Center for Game 6 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The Flyers held a three games to one lead in this series, but failed to eliminate the Capitals in Game 5 as Alexander Semin's power-play goal with 5:27 to play in the third period lifted Washington to a 3-2 home victory.

Washington has come back from a 3-1 deficit once before against the Flyers, as it won the final three games to shock Philadelphia in the 1988 Patrick Division semifinals.

Tonight, Philadelphia will get a chance to end the series on their home ice, where it was 21-14-6 during the regular season. The Capitals were 20-16-5 as the visiting club this season.

If the Capitals win this evening's test they will host the seventh and deciding game Tuesday at the Verizon Center.

Nicklas Backstrom and Sergei Fedorov also tallied for the Capitals in the Game 5 triumph, and Cristobal Huet made 30 saves for his second win of the postseason.

Vinny Prospal and Derian Hatcher scored for the Flyers, who also got a pair of assists from Danny Briere. Martin Biron allowed three goals on 26 shots in defeat.

Briere leads all players in this year's playoffs with five goals and nine points.

The Flyers not only lost the game, but also suffered an injury to forward Mike Knuble, who will miss the rest of this series with a torn hamstring. Knuble, who had two goals and three assists in the series, was injured while diving to block a shot in the second period of Game 5.

Washington is in the postseason for the first time since 2003 after winning its first Southeast Division title since 2001. The Capitals haven't won a playoff series since making a run to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998.

Philadelphia is back in the playoffs after suffering through the worst season in franchise history a year ago. The 2006-07 edition of the Orange & Black not only missed out on the postseason, but finished last in the NHL for the first time in club history. The Flyers' 54 points was the lowest-ever total for the team, but the 2007-08 club rebounded with a 95-point season.

The Flyers are trying to get out of the first round for the first time since reaching the conference finals in 2004.

The Capitals have won two of the three all-time playoff series against the Flyers. Washington posted series' wins over Philly in 1984 and 1988, but the Flyers won the last postseason meeting between the clubs in 1989.
