Still swimming: Roenick back for one more year with Sharks

Tue 20th, May 2008

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Veteran forward Jeremy Roenick agreed to terms with the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

That means the 38-year-old will return for his 20th NHL campaign with the club that posted the second-best record in the Western Conference this past season.

"I'm so happy to say that I will be back for another year," Roenick said from a video on the team's web site. "Super GM Doug Wilson and myself agreed to a deal the other day and I can't tell you, I am so ecstatic."

Roenick, who came to San Jose as a free-agent last year, had 14 goals and 33 points in 69 games, ranking eighth on the Pacific Division champions in scoring.

The Massachusetts native became just the third American-born player to score his 500th goal, accomplishing the feat on a memorable shot November 10 against his former team, the Phoenix Coyotes.

Called upon to be an energetic presence in the postseason, he collected two goals and five points in 12 playoff contests, as the Sharks advanced to the conference semifinals before bowing to the Dallas Stars in an epic four- overtime defeat in Game 6 on May 4.

"Jeremy Roenick was a warrior for our team on and off the ice this season," Wilson added.

Roenick was also honored with a nomination for the Bill Masterton Trophy, which is presented to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the sport.

Over 1,321 career games, Roenick has amassed 509 goals, 1,203 points and 1,439 penalty minutes with Chicago (1988-96), Phoenix (1996-01, 2006-07), Philadelphia (2001-04), Los Angeles (2005-06) and San Jose (2007-08).

Roenick is a two-time 50-goal scorer (1991-93), and three times reached the 100-point plateau (1991-94), but has reached the Stanley Cup Finals only once in his career -- with the Chicago Blackhawks in a four-game loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992.
