Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Brad Stuart and Tomas Holmstrom each had a goal in the first period to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-0 lead after one period of action in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Red Wings grabbed a 1-0 lead just 6:55 into the game. Valtteri Filppula rushed the puck into the Pittsburgh end and dished it over to the right side for Stuart. Filppula then charged the net and Stuart's blast from the top of the right circle got through Filppula's screen and past Marc-Andre Fleury.
Detroit took a 2-0 advantage at the 11:18 mark. A turnover resulted in the Red Wings getting the puck behind the net and it was thrown out front. Henrik Zetterberg got a backhander on net that Fleury slowed down, but Holmstrom knocked the puck in just as it was about to cross the goalline.
Detroit's defense, which limited the Penguins to just 19 shots -- seven over the last two periods -- in Game 1, held Pittsburgh without a shot for the first 12 minutes.
That shot came on the first power play of the game and Pittsburgh nearly scored a few seconds later as Sidney Crosby had the puck down low. But he was off-balance and his weak shot was easily stopped by Chris Osgood.
The Penguins were awarded another power play with 2:11 left in the first on a Dan Cleary hooking call. Gary Roberts found himself alone with the puck in front of the net off a Jordan Staal pass, but Osgood scrambled to stop the low backhander and keep the Pens off the board.
In all, Osgood needed to make just six saves, all on the two Pittsburgh power plays, to keep the Penguins off the scoreboard for the fourth consecutive period.
