Sharks top Kings in Murray's debut as coach

Sat 11th, October 2008

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Tomas Plihal's shorthanded goal gave San Jose the lead late in the second period as the Sharks stopped Los Angeles, 3-1, spoiling the Kings coaching debut of Terry Murray.

Devin Setoguchi and Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks, who got 12 saves from Evgeni Nabokov in their second game of the season.

Alexander Frolov had the lone goal for the Kings in the opener of the home- and-home series. These teams will play Sunday night at the Staples Center.

"A win is a win, you want to get them early as they are going to get tougher," said Pavelski. "But as we keep getting better, every game we are going to get better learning what we can and can't do. But things are going good for us."

Jason LaBarbera made 38 saves for Los Angeles.

"We've got to be a lot better," said LaBarbera. "That obviously was not the start we're looking for. It obviously was not our best effort. We were too uptight maybe and we did not relax and play our game. So we have to do better tomorrow and play with more energy and more jump."

Plihal gave San Jose a 2-1 edge with 2:11 remaining in the middle period. With Dan Boyle in the penalty box for interference, Marc-Edouard Vlasic sent a long pass to Plihal, who faked out defenseman Jack Johnson in the left circle and got off a shot that eluded LaBarbera.

"It was a good play from Vlasic and I just tried to go one on one and put it on the net," said Plihal.

Pavelski then added insurance just 63 seconds into the final period on a wrister from the right circle.

Frolov scored 6:34 into the game on the power play on a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle before Setoguchi tied it 72 seconds into the second by depositing a loose puck from in front into the net.
