Boucher helps Sharks blank Kings

Sun 12th, October 2008

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Brian Boucher stopped 21 shots for his 15th career shutout, and Lukas Kaspar scored his first NHL goal as San Jose earned a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings to complete a home-and-home sweep.

The Sharks have won their first three games of the season.

Jason LaBarbera made 18 saves in the home opener for the Kings, but Los Angeles was hurt by missed opportunities and a pair of disallowed goals.

"Sometimes you have to find different ways to win," said Sharks coach Todd McLellan. "By no means was it pretty, there were a lot of things we could have done much better, but the test for us tonight was the fatigue factor playing three (games) and four (nights) early in the season. I'm not sure we passed with flying colors, but we found a way to win."

Kaspar, a first-round draft pick of the Sharks in 2004, scored at 9:56 of the second period on a 3-on-2 break, blasting a shot into the net from above the right circle.

"I just skated down and that's what you work on during the whole training camp and I just wanted to put it on his far side and then it went post and in," said Kaspar. "I didn't even see it to tell you the truth. I was looking around and I didn't see the puck, then I see the referees pointing at the net so I was happy."

The Kings seemed to tie the game with just under nine minutes left in the same period when Jarret Stoll shot the puck from above the left circle past Boucher. That marker was taken off the board because Dustin Brown was in the crease.

Then, with just less than four minutes remaining in the second, Matt Moulson stuffed the disc from in front past Boucher. But that goal was also waived off after a replay because Moulson directed the puck under the netminder's pad with his right skate.

Los Angeles had a chance to tie the game on a late power play as Christian Ehrhoff was sent off for tripping with 5:44 remaining, but the Kings never got a good chance at the net.

"I really liked the way we played, especially in the second half of the game," said Kings coach Terry Murray. "The third period was tremendous. We started to see something I hadn't seen yet. It's that starting to work hard for your teammates."
