Danis records another shutout as Isles top Sabres

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Yann Danis stopped 31 shots to secure his second consecutive home shutout and Sean Bergenheim scored twice as the New York Islanders beat the Buffalo Sabres, 2-0, at Nassau Coliseum.

Jack Hillen, Kyle Okposo, and Frans Nielsen each had an assist for the Islanders, who bounced back from a 5-4 defeat in a shootout against Toronto on Thursday.

Danis made a career-high 40 saves to earn his second career shutout in a 4-0 win over the Devils one week ago.

"It feels really good here," said Danis about playing at home.

Patrick Lalime turned away 32-of-34 shots for the Sabres, who have dropped three straight games.

"It (Islanders) was a young team that was ready to work," said Lalime. "It seemed like they were maybe a little more hungry than we were."

Buffalo was without starting netminder Ryan Miller for a third straight game. The steady backstop is out indefinitely with a high ankle sprain he suffered during the Sabres' 4-2 win over the Rangers a week ago.

In addition to Miller's injury, Buffalo was without leading goal scorer Thomas Vanek, who has been out for the past three weeks due to a fractured jaw.

The goaltenders were sensational during a scoreless first period. The Sabres had the lone power play in the frame but failed to capitalize. The Islanders actually had a short-handed 2-on-1 break, but Lalime made a great save to keep the game scoreless.

New York drew first blood at the 6:13 mark of the second stanza. Bergenheim, who had his back to Lalime in the left circle, spun to his right and fired a wrister under the pads of the netminder.

Things got heated up in the second when Buffalo's Paul Gaustad and New York's Blake Comeau each received 10-minute misconduct penalties. A total of eight penalties were called in the stanza -- seven coming in the final eight minutes of the period.

The Sabres had a 4-on-3 advantage after the Islanders' Radek Martinek was called for elbowing at the 18:53 mark. Buffalo's Derek Roy and Okposo were already in the box after being whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Buffalo did fire a shot off the post during the power play, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Buffalo's attempt at a comeback took a hit when Toni Lydman received an interference penalty with 7:21 remaining. Buffalo successfully killed off the penalty to leave themselves with 5:21 to go.

Bergenheim added an insurance goal with 2:02 left He was wide open in front of the net, took a pass from Nielsen and slid the puck just inside the right post.

The teams combined to go 0-for-8 on the power play...There was a total of 12 penalties in the game...The teams have split four games this season.
