Canucks lose Luongo, but beat Penguins

Sat 22nd, November 2008

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Daniel Sedin recorded a goal and two assists as the Vancouver Canucks overcame the loss of goaltender Roberto Luongo to injury to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1, at Mellon Arena.

Pavol Demitra tallied the other two goals -- including an empty-netter -- while Henrik Sedin assisted on all three scores for the Canucks, winners in seven of their last nine.

Luongo was lost before five minutes was played and Curtis Sanford stopped 17- of-18 shots in the victory.

"When I saw him go down, I knew it wasn't good," Sanford said. "You hate to see your teammate down on the ice like that. He's the biggest part of our team. We're going to have to get past that, and play some games without him. I'm going to have to be a big part of that."

Mike Zigomanis tallied the lone goal for the Penguins, who have lost two of three since a six-game winning streak. Dany Sabourin made 16 saves in the loss.

"It's a disappointing game for us," Penguins head coach Michel Therrien. "We didn't have the right attitude to play that game. They worked harder than us and deserved to win."

Less than 30 seconds into the game, 50 minutes of penalties were handed out including a pair of game misconducts after Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke upended a Vancouver player and ignited a brawl on the ice. Cooke and the Canucks' Jannik Hansen were banished for their roles in the scrum.

Minutes later, Luongo apparently hurt his left leg making a pad save. He was helped off the ice by teammates, and Sanford came in and stopped all seven shots he faced in the first period.

The Canucks got on the board with 1:55 left in the first. Demitra lifted the puck over Sabourin's head from the side of the net, skated around to the other side and tapped it in before Sabourin could get his glove over the puck.

Vancouver increased its lead to two early in the second. Daniel Sedin took the puck through the offensive zone, slipped past a couple defenders in front of the net and was able to get the puck under Sabourin at 6:50.

Pittsburgh made it a one-goal game in the opening seconds of the third. Zigomanis took a feed from Tyler Kennedy on the side of the net, circled out in front and beat Sanford on the glove side just 22 seconds in.

The Penguins pulled Sabourin inside one minute to play, but Demitra hit the empty net to put the game away with 11.3 seconds left.
