Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - James Johnson scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds, leading the 15th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons to an 83-58 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Johnson shot 8-of-10 from the floor -- including 3-of-3 from long distance -- for Wake Forest (7-0), which earned the 76 Classic title with wins over Cal State Fullerton, UTEP and Baylor. L.D. Williams added 16 points, while Al- Farouq Aminu had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Demon Deacons.
"I thought we played hard, but I thought we could have played a little better than we played," Wake Forest head coach Dino Gaudio said. "I don't want to take away anything from Indiana. I thought they were a hard, tough basketball team. Good win for Wake Forest, good win for the ACC."
Matt Roth had a team-high 12 points for Indiana (4-3), which faces another nationally-ranked opponent in Gonzaga for the Hartford Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday. Malik Story added 10 points, while Nick Williams posted nine points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
"Before we can make strides, we have to learn to compete at a higher level for a longer period of time," Indiana head coach Tom Crean said. "We have to learn to talk more to one another. We've got to learn to listen better. I guess it's all those things that you would expect with a brand new young team. I'm learning it for the first time, too. It's just different."
The Demon Deacons scored nine of the game's first 12 points, but Indiana was able to close the gap for the first 10 minutes. Daniel Moore tied the game at 20 for the Hoosiers with a layup with 10:25 left.
But Wake Forest proceeded to close out the half with a 27-11 run, including a 9-0 spurt to start the surge. Johnson's 15 points led all scorers at the half, as the hosts led, 47-31, at the break.
The teams went back-and-forth early in the second half, and Jeff Teague's layup near the midway point of the period put Wake Forest up 61-39. Indiana did not get much closer from there, and the Demon Deacons cruised to victory.
