Blues down Isles in shootout despite Biron's strong performance

Thu 11th, March 2010

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - T.J. Oshie and Brad Boyes scored in the shootout, lifting the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 win over the struggling New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Chris Mason stopped New York's Frans Nielsen to open the shootout before Oshie scored on a wrister. Mason then made a save on Matt Moulson before Boyes beat Martin Biron with a wrist shot to secure the victory.

Patrik Berglund scored in regulation for the Blues, who rebounded from a loss Saturday at Colorado to win for the sixth time in their last seven games. Mason stopped 29-of-30 shots.

Biron made 35 saves, including five in overtime, for the Islanders, who have dropped their last four. Moulson had New York's lone goal.

"We're getting our chances late in the game and in overtime, with the power play," Moulson said. "It's just a matter of bearing down and correcting those little things."

Both scores in regulation came on the power play.

Moulson's came with just 9.4 seconds left in the opening period. Standing in the slot, he one-timed Mark Streit's pass from the left point past Mason.

Berglund's redirection of Andy McDonald's shot from above the right circle slipped past Biron at the 6:24 mark of the second period, evening the game.

"Penalty kill's been outstanding this year and the last little while," said Blues head coach Davis Payne. "They found the way to get the one at the end of that first power play of theirs, and we answered with one of our own and our penalty kill really stepped up."

The Islanders' Richard Park was whistled for high-sticking with 1:40 left in the third period, while the Blues' Barret Jackman was called for boarding 2:34 into overtime, but neither team capitalized on the resulting power plays.

Game Notes

The Blues finished 1-for-6 on the man advantage, while the Islanders were 1- for-5...St. Louis improved to 3-1-0 on its six-game road trip, which continues Saturday at Columbus...New York hosts the Devils on Saturday.
