(Sports Network) - Two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference will face off tonight in the Steel City as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Buffalo Sabres at Mellon Arena.
The Sabres, who lead the Northeast Division with 71 points, have won their last two outings following an 0-3-1 winless stretch.
Buffalo has won each of its last two games by a 2-1 score, edging the Devils in a shootout on Wednesday and downing division rival Boston in regulation on Friday.
Ryan Miller made 30 saves against the visiting Bruins and his performance allowed a pair of first-period goals to stand up for the victory.
Thomas Vanek and Henrik Tallinder provided the goals for the Sabres, who have posted back-to-back wins for the first time since a season-high, six-game winning streak from December 27-January 8.
"We did a great job overall. We played a real smart game from the first goal on," said Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff. "We did have a couple missed chances, to get a two-goal lead, but with the other team well rested we played a real smart game."
Despite having a solid 14-9-2 record as the guest this year, the Sabres have struggled lately on the road. Buffalo has lost five of its last six road contests, posting a 1-3-2 record in those games.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is fourth in the East with 69 points and is just three behind New Jersey for first place in the Atlantic Division.
The Penguins won for the third time in four games on Sunday afternoon, edging Detroit in a rematch of last year's Stanley Cup Finals, which Pittsburgh won in seven games. Pittsburgh and the Red Wings had also met the previous year in the Cup finals, but Detroit won the 2008 series in six games.
Sunday's game went the distance as the host Pens were spurred to victory by captain Sidney Crosby, who scored in regulation and added the shootout winner in the 2-1 decision.
In the second round, Crosby lifted a backhander into the top of the net past a sprawled-out Jimmy Howard. After Marc-Andre Fleury stopped a Jason Williams wrister with the glove, Evgeni Malkin outwaited Howard and slid the puck past Howard's outstretched left pad for the win.
Crosby scored his 34th goal of the season in regulation for Pittsburgh, while Fleury turned aside 23 shots for the Penguins.
Tonight's game marks the finale of a three-game homestand for the Penguins, who are 16-10-1 as the host this year. Pittsburgh will play its next two games in Montreal and Washington.
The Sabres and Penguins have split a pair of meetings, both of which were staged in western New York. Pittsburgh has taken seven of 10 overall in the series and has also won four of the last six matchups at the Igloo.
