(Sports Network) - A recent string of nine straight losses has the Flames on the bubble in the Western Conference's playoff race. Calgary, one day after making a big trade to shake up its roster, will try to stay on the right track tonight when it hosts the Philadelphia Flyers at Pengrowth Saddledome for the first time in over four years.
The Flames ended an 0-6-3 slump with a big 6-1 victory over the Oilers on Saturday. The win came in the opener of a three-game homestand and gave Calgary its first-ever season series sweep of Edmonton as it took all six meetings this year in the Battle of Alberta.
Jarome Iginla and Dustin Boyd both scored a pair of goals, while Iginla also had two assists to surpass 900 career NHL points. Iginla now has three goals and seven points over his last three games after notching just three assists and zero goals over his previous 11 games.
Miikka Kiprusoff recorded 27 saves, while Rene Bourque and Dion Phaneuf each had a goal.
Calgary, which had lost six in a row as the host, is now tied for eighth in the West with Detroit, as both clubs have 62 points. Tonight, the Flames will try to win consecutive contests for the first time since a five-game win streak from December 28-January 5.
Phaneuf's goal on Saturday turned out to be his last in a Flames uniform, as he was traded to Toronto on Sunday along with forward Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie for forwards Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers, Matt Stajan and defenseman Ian White.
Phaneuf, selected ninth overall by Calgary in the 2003 draft, had 10 goals and 22 points in 55 games this year, while Sjostrom had just a goal and six points in 46 games.
Hagman, meanwhile, led Toronto with 20 goals at the time of the trade, while Stajan was second on the club with 25 assists and 41 points. White posted 17 assists and 26 points with the Maple Leafs this year, with Mayers adding two goals and eight points.
All four of the new additions could be on the ice tonight for the Flames.
"Trust me, we've got some pretty good players coming back," head coach Brent Sutter told Calgary's Web site. "It's a tough day, let's not kid ourselves. It's tough on everybody and yet the Calgary Flames are excited about acquiring the players that we've got and the Toronto Maple Leafs are excited about acquiring the players they got. Like all trades you want it to work out best for everybody."
There have also been reports that the Flames and New York Rangers are close to pulling off a four-player trade. In the rumored deal, Calgary will acquire forwards Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins in exchange for forwards Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust.
Calgary recorded a 5-1 win at Philadelphia on March 5 of last season to snap a two-game series losing streak. The Flyers notched a 3-2 win the last time the clubs met at Pengrowth Saddledome on October 4, 2005, giving them a win in two straight and four of their last five trips to Calgary.
The Flyers kick off a three-game road trip this evening after concluding a six-game homestand with a 4-2-0 record. Philadelphia had lost two straight on the stand before closing it with Saturday's 2-1 victory versus the Islanders.
Danny Briere and Scott Hartnell both scored, while Ray Emery made 31 saves. Hartnell posted his first goal in seven games and just his third of his last 26 contests, while Briere scored for just the second time in 11 games.
"It's always fun to score a goal, that is what hockey is about," said Hartnell. "Everyone was very emotional here today. It was kind of a chippy game. A lot of stuff after the whistle, but we got two points and that's what we needed."
Philadelphia, which has lost four of its last five on the road, is tied with the Rangers and Panthers for the final three playoff spots in the East.
While the Flames waived good-bye to a defenseman, the Flyers could debut one of their own in Lukas Krajicek. Krajicek was signed over the weekend to add depth to the blueline after spending the previous season and parts of this year with Tampa Bay.
The former first-round pick hasn't played in the NHL since December 17 after getting assigned to Norfolk of the AHL by the Lightning.
Emery, who has made seven straight starts, is 0-1-1 with a 1.47 goals-against average versus the Flames. Kiprusoff, who should make a seventh straight start tonight, is 3-1-1 with a 1.56 GAA in his career versus the Flyers.
