(Sports Network) - Teemu Selanne reached a milestone the last time the Ducks faced the Avalanche. He will again try to make history this evening as Anaheim attempts to deal Colorado a third straight defeat in a meeting at Pepsi Center.
The Ducks picked up their second victory in three games versus the Avalanche this year on March 21, a 5-2 victory that featured the 600th goal of Selanne's NHL career. He became the 18th player in league history to hit the milestone and third European.
Selanne has gone without a goal in four games since, leaving him one shy of matching Jari Kurri for the most goals scored by a Finnish player in the NHL. Kurri was in attendance when Anaheim hosted Dallas on Monday, as Selanne was honored before the game. Though he didn't score on eight shots he did set up rookie Nick Bonino's first NHL goal in his second career game, as the Ducks notched a 3-1 victory over the Stars.
Corey Perry added a goal and an assist and matched his previous career high for points in a season with 72, set last year. Kyle Chipchura also scored for the Ducks, who have won six of their last eight games to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Anaheim, which has made the playoffs in each of the last four seasons, is nine points back of Colorado for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with seven games to play.
Anaheim also received a boost on Monday from backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney, who made 30 saves after Jonas Hiller was scratched from the start due to back spasms.
Hiller did not make the trip to Colorado, meaning McElhinney is likely to start again. He lost his only career start versus the Avalanche, allowing six goals on 39 shots on Jan. 18, 2009 while with the Flames. Anaheim recalled goaltender J.P. Levasseur from Springfield of the American Hockey League on Tuesday to presumably serve as McElhinney's backup.
"[McElhinney] continues to prove that he's a quality goaltender," Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said.
Ryan Getzlaf also did not make the trip to Denver because of a lingering left ankle injury that held him out of the Dallas game. He has 50 assists and 69 points on the season.
Colorado will try to right its ship tonight versus an Anaheim team it has lost six of seven and 10 of its last 12 games against. That includes three consecutive home defeats to the Ducks.
The Avs have slipped into eighth in the West, four points up on ninth-place Calgary with seven contests to play and a game in hand, after losing two straight and five of their last six games.
"The ball's in our court still," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "We can control our destiny. We don't have to worry about other teams."
Colorado was dealt a 4-3 setback by San Jose on Sunday despite two goals from Peter Mueller, who was returning from a one-game absence due to a hip injury and now has seven goals and 17 points in 12 games with the Avalanche since being acquired at the trade deadline from Phoenix.
Kevin Porter, also acquired from the Coyotes, scored his second goal in as many games and Craig Anderson made 28 saves. Anderson was making his 66th appearance of the season to break Patrick Roy's club record set in 1997-98.
Anderson was pulled early last Sunday versus the Ducks after allowing four goals on 19 shots. He is 2-4-0 with a 3.27 GAA and .906 save percentage against the Ducks lifetime.
Colorado, which trails Vancouver by seven points for first place in the Northwest Division, begins a three-game homestand tonight and has won eight of its last 11 as the host.
