NHL Game Summary - Carolina at New Jersey

Final Score: Carolina 1 - New Jersey 6

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Paul Martin scored a pair of goals and Martin Brodeur ended with 22 saves as the New Jersey Devils stormed past the Carolina Hurricanes, 6-1, at the Prudential Center.

Jay Pandolfo had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who snapped a two-game skid. Colin White, David Oduya and Dainius Zubrus also tallied, while Dave Clarkson, Jamie Langenbrunner and Patrick Elias each added a pair of assists.

"I thought tonight was as good a game as we've played all year, and not at all because we scored six goals," said Devils head coach Brent Sutter. "It was the way we played the game. We played 60 minutes. Our emotion and intensity levels for the game were very high."

Keith Aucoin had the lone tally for Carolina, which has lost three of its last four games. Cam Ward stopped just 14-of-20 shots before he was pulled in favor of John Grahame, who stopped all six shots faced.

The Devils jumped on top just 3:08 into the contest, as White ripped a shot from just inside the blue line that found its way through traffic and into the back of the cage.

Martin quickly made it 2-0 on the power play, as his shot was deflected past Ward and rang off the inside of the near post at 5:53.

The 'Canes fought back and cut it to 2-1, as a diving Aucoin knocked home Scott Walker's pass from the end boards at 10:35, but New Jersey restored its two-goal edge late on a breakaway tally by Oduya with 4:13 left.

"I went back at the last second of the power play," Oduya said. "I wanted to get the puck up ice, and I saw an opening. The (defense) was kind of wide and probably expected a dump...I tried to take it to the net, got a shot off, and it sneaked under the goalie pads."

Zubrus' goal off a deflection in front gave the Devils a 4-1 lead with 2:02 remaining in the first. That marker also came on the man-advantage.

"We were scrambling from the start," Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. "We lost the first 20 minutes. All of them."

New Jersey continued the rout in the second when Martin's wrist shot bounced through the five hole of Ward and ended up in the back of the net at 1:29.

A perfectly executed 2-on-1 later resulted in New Jersey's sixth goal, as Pandolfo rammed home John Madden's cross-crease feed at 14:41.

There was no scoring in the third period, as the team's combined for just 12 shots in the final 20 minutes.
