Final Score: Colorado 3 - Calgary 2
Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Paul Stastny's power-play goal 3:02 into overtime lifted the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome.
Ryan Smyth and Milan Hejduk also scored for Colorado, which has won two of its last three games and continued to gain momentum for its playoff push. The Avalanche were busy during Tuesday's heavy day of NHL trading, one day after the club added center Peter Forsberg to the roster. Prior to the 3:00 p.m. (et) deadline, the Avs obtained defenseman Adam Foote, who previously spent 13 seasons with the club, from Columbus as well as defenseman Ruslan Salei from the Florida Panthers. Jose Theodore turned aside 27 shots in the win. The Avalanche are four points out of first place in the Northwest Division.
Dustin Boyd and Robyn Regehr scored for the Flames, who saw their four-game win streak halted. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed three goals on 34 shots for Calgary, which still leads the Northwest by one standings point despite the loss -- Minnesota also lost at Washington.
Calgary did not make any deadline transactions.
With the score tied 2-2 in overtime, Calgary's Jarome Iginla was whistled for tripping and the visitors went to work with the extra skater. A shot from the point yielded a loose puck near the left post, and Smyth sent a blind backhand pass across the goal mouth for Stastny, who was all alone and easily slid the puck into a wide open net from the right post for his 19th goal of the season.
With Joe Sakic's recent return from the injured list, the addition of Forsberg and now Foote, Colorado has returned three major pieces of its perennial power roster from the mid-1990s until the labor stoppage earlier this decade. The club won Stanley Cup titles with Sakic and Forsberg leading the way in 1996 and 2001.
The Avalanche trailed 2-1 in the third period, but used a power-play goal by Hejduk to tie the contest with 6:27 remaining in regulation. David Hale's tripping minor allowed the Avs to skate 5-on-4, and the visitors needed only 16 seconds to cash in.
Stastny streaked down the right-wing side and, at the top of the circle, left a drop pass for Hejduk. Several strides later, Hejduk beat Kiprusoff from a sharp angle near the base of the circle.
"We did a lot of good things and we had a lot of chances, but they got some late power-play goals, and that was the difference," said Iginla.
Calgary is now 16-10-8 at home this season.
Smyth's 12th goal opened the scoring 4:08 into the first period, but the Flames knotted the contest with 4:25 to play in the stanza.
Owen Nolan held control along the goal line to the left of the net and sent a pass across the crease that slid through the skates of Colorado's Kyle Cumiskey before Boyd one-timed it home from the right post.
The only goal of the second period was a short-handed tally that gave the Flames a 2-1 edge. With Matthew Lombardi in the penalty box, the Flames, skating one man down, still managed to control the action and a loose puck drifted onto the stick of Regehr, who fired a wrist shot from the high left slot. The puck was headed wide of the net to the right side, but it deflected off the skate of Colorado defenseman Scott Hannan and crossed the goal line with 7:02 remaining.
In that second period, Foote suddenly appeared on the ice with his new team. Colorado's front office arranged for a jet to fly Foote to Calgary and he arrived in time to played 18:30 over two periods.
"I got there for the second period, but I wasn't warmed up," said Foote. "But once I got going, I felt better. I can't believe (I'm back). We get guys back off injury, and then a few trades, it seems like we should have some pretty good energy."
