Final Score: Pittsburgh 4 - NY Islanders 2
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist, and Ty Conklin made 50 saves as the Pittsburgh Penguins doubled up the New York Islanders, 4-2, at Nassau Coliseum.
Jeff Taffe, Jordan Staal and Connor James also tallied for the Pens, who made a blockbuster deal just before the trade deadline arrived at 3 p.m. (et) on Tuesday. The club acquired forwards Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis from Atlanta, in exchange for forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen, prospect Angelo Esposito and a first-round pick.
Hossa, who was considered the premier player on the market, had 26 goals and 30 assists in 60 games with the Thrashers. He has also scored 80 or more points in each of the last four seasons, and his arrival is expected to shake up the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Frans Nielsen and Ruslan Fedotenko lit the lamp, and Rick DiPietro ended with 17 saves for the Isles, who also had a busy day at the trade deadline. The club acquired defenseman Rob Davison from San Jose, but traded forward Chris Simon to Minnesota and defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron to Anaheim. New York also inked center Mike Comrie to a one-year contract extension that will take him through the 2008-09 season.
Pittsburgh was outshot 23-6 in the first period, but managed the only two goals. The first came as Malkin collected the puck behind the net and moved into the left circle before wristing a shot by DiPietro at 10:50.
Taffe then made it 2-0 when he poked home a rebound during a 5-on-3 power play with 2:08 remaining.
The Isles cut it to 2-1 on Nielsen's tally at the midpoint of the second period, and by the close of the stanza, had registered 34 shots to Pittsburgh's 10.
Staal made it 3-1 at 12:55 of the third, as he took a feed from Malkin and rifled it high over the glove of DiPietro, and James later inflated the cushion when he notched his first career tally with 3:02 remaining.
Fedotenko jammed home a rebound with the Isles on the power play and 1:17 left, but that was the last time they'd solve Conklin, who turned aside 18 shots in the third.
"It doesn't always go the way you want it to go," said Conklin. "The important thing is I got a chance to bounce back (from a pair of losses). I wanted to make sure I did."
Pittsburgh snapped a two-game skid, and has earned points in six straight. New York, meanwhile, has dropped two in a row on the heels of a six-game win streak.
