Final Score: Edmonton 3 - Nashville 4
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Jason Arnott was credited with the game- winning goal in the third period, as the Nashville Predators edged the Edmonton Oilers, 4-3, at Bridgestone Arena, in the first game for both teams following the Olympic break.
Defenseman Denis Grebeshkov, who was acquired by Nashville from Edmonton on Monday, scored a goal against his former team while the Predators also received goals from Shea Weber and Colin Wilson in the victory.
Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne allowed three goals on 25 shots. The Preds have won three of their last four.
"It's going to be tough mentally," Predators defenseman Ryan Suter said of getting back into the groove of the NHL schedule. "Physically we're fine. But mentally it's going to be draining for us. We just have to come with a clear head every day and work hard to help the team win."
Mike Comrie, Gilbert Brule and Marc Pouliot scored for the Oilers, who have lost six of their last seven games overall. Jeff Deslauriers made 24 saves in the losing effort.
With the score tied 3-3 in the third period, a fluke goal led to a 4-3 Nashville lead. With Jason Strudwick draped on his back, Arnott, from the rear boards to the right of the net, sent the puck blindly toward the goal mouth and it inadvertently deflected off the skate of Edmonton blueliner Tom Gilbert and caromed across the goal line at the 5:02 mark.
The Oilers opened the scoring 6:37 into the first period when Comrie cashed in on a rebound at the end of a 3-on-1 break before Wilson's wrister from the low slot at the 12:14 mark knotted the contest.
Grebeshkov, who was a member of the Oilers less than 48 hours prior to the game, then lit the lamp against his former team to give his new team a 2-1 lead. He held control in the high slot, faked a shot to force the defender out of position, then ripped home a slap shot with 5:05 to go before the first intermission.
"You always wish the best for guys you play with," Gilbert said. "Guys that you know, your friends. But not always when...you're playing a guy that was on your team. You obviously wish the best, but not to score on you."
In the middle stanza, Brule's 13th goal tied the score at 2-2 when his redirection -- from the inner rim of the left circle -- of a point shot by Theo Peckham flew past Rinne at 11:53.
With 4:48 to go in the second, Weber's one-timer from the point while Nashville was on the power play put the Preds back on top.
Less than three minutes into the third, Pouliot's slap shot from the top of the right circle after he won a race for the loose puck made it 3-3.
