Final Score: St. Louis 5 - Phoenix 2
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - David Backes and T.J. Oshie each had a goal and an assist as the St. Louis Blues took a 5-2 decision over the Phoenix Coyotes in the first game for both teams after the Olympic break.
Andy McDonald, Jay McClement and Brad Boyes each scored a goal for the Blues, who have won four straight. Chris Mason stopped 37 shots in the win.
"It took a little bit of a delay, but we got goals," Boyes said. "We might have got outplayed a little bit in the first, but we found goals and we found ways to get pucks in net and come out ahead, which was a big lift."
Joel Perrault and Matthew Lombardi each lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who have dropped their past three games. Ilya Bryzgalov gave up five goals on 22 shots in two periods of play. Jason LaBarbera played the third period and stopped all 13 shots he faced.
"That was not good. It's not acceptable and we have to be better for the next game for sure, and everybody in this room knows it," Phoenix forward Shane Doan said. "To a man, starting right in our net all the way out to the forwards, every single guy needs to be better."
Phoenix scored just 3:43 into the game as Peter Mueller sent a pass from behind the net to the front where Perrault jammed it home.
St. Louis, though, scored the next five goals of the game to assume control.
The first came of the stick of Oshie as his wrister found the back of the net at the 8:53 mark and McClement made it a 2-1 game with 5:58 to play in the first on his ninth goal of the season.
McDonald made it a 3-1 game halfway through the second as he redirected a Patrik Berglund pass in front of the net.
Just over two minutes later, St. Louis was skating on the power play and Backes' wrister found the back of the net for a 4-1 lead.
Boyes made it a 5-1 game in the final minute of the second period as his wrister on the fly from the left circle made it through traffic.
Lombardi's goal at the 8:15 mark of the third accounted for the final score.
