Final Score: NY Rangers 0 - Washington 2
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jose Theodore stopped all 30 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season, as Washington posted a defensive-oriented 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers at Verizon Center.
Eric Fehr and Eric Belanger lit the lamp for the Capitals, who have won three in a row and eight of their last 11.
"You need to win game 2-0, 2-1, when you're in the playoffs," said Theodore. "We played really well. We never panicked and never came them much, especially in the third."
Alex Auld, making his first start since New York picked him off waivers from Dallas early this week, made 26 stops for the Rangers, whose three-game win streak was halted.
"Coming into a game against this team you're expecting a lot of shots," said Auld. "But I thought we did a good job tonight and it's just unfortunate that we came out on the wrong end."
Fehr struck on the power play at 10:56 of the first period, and Theodore backed that up with 12 saves.
Belanger doubled Washington's lead at the 13:38 mark of the second, and the Caps netminder followed up with 10 saves.
Theodore capped the contest by halting eight shots over the final 20 minutes.
