NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Philadelphia

Final Score: NY Islanders 2 - Philadelphia 3

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Simon Gagne was credited with the game- winning power-play goal with 6:06 remaining in regulation, as the Philadelphia Flyers rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the New York Islanders, 3-2, at Wachovia Center.

Claude Giroux and Jeff Carter also scored for the Flyers, who have won two straight and earned at least one point in four of their first five games following the Olympic break (3-1-1). The Flyers have now defeated the Islanders 15 consecutive times, which marks the longest active stretch of victories by one team over any single opponent in the league.

Michael Leighton turned aside 23 shots for Philadelphia.

Rookie John Tavares and Kyle Okposo scored for the Islanders, who are fading from the playoff race and have now dropped three straight. Dwayne Roloson allowed three goals on 35 shots in the loss.

"I thought we played well," said Roloson. "We did the things we needed to do to win the hockey game. Unfortunately, they capitalized on a couple power plays -- that's just the way things have been bouncing for us."

With the scored tied at 2-2 in the third period, a boarding minor called on Trevor Gillies proved costly for New York. An attempted clear by the short- handed visitors was barely kept inside the zone at the left point by Matt Carle, and the disc was then corralled by Giroux atop the left circle.

Giroux sent a pass across the slot for Gagne at the bottom of the right circle. Gagne spotted captain Mike Richards open at the top of the crease and attempted to pass to Richards, but the puck instead deflected off the stick of New York defenseman Mark Streit and past Roloson at the 13:54 mark.

"I was trying to pass it to (Richards) -- I was making a hard pass, and sometimes they hit a stick or a skate and the puck goes in," said Gagne. "It was a lucky goal, but I'll take it. It was a big goal for our team."

The Isles pulled their netminder with just over a minute to go, but the Flyers used several clears and key faceoff wins in their defensive zone to hold on for the victory.

The Islanders opened the scoring at the 7:06 mark of the first period. A shot by Richard Park from the slot was saved by Leighton, but the puck squirted loose behind the netminder. Tavares hustled in from the right side, gained control of the puck at the near post and tucked it in for his 18th goal.

New York moved ahead by two at the 10:27 mark when Okposo beat Leighton with a wrister from the inner rim of the right circle.

The Flyers cut their deficit in half at 12:03 of the second frame via Carter's 30th goal of the season. Danny Briere held control behind the net along the rear boards and sent a quick pass to Carter, who lit the lamp with a snap shot from below the left circle.

A nifty move by Giroux knotted the contest at the eight-minute mark of the third. Skating on the power play, Richards held control along the left half- wall and sent a centering pass for Giroux, who was streaking down the slot, accepted the pass from Richards and scored with a backhander from the top of the crease behind a full head of steam.
