Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Brian Pothier scored on a one-timer 23 seconds into overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at RBC Center.

In the extra session, Pothier drifted down from his point position to the middle of the right circle and hammered a Ray Whitney pass to the back of the net.

Whitney, Pothier and Eric Staal each had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, who have won their last eight games at home. Carolina rookie goaltender Justin Peters made 37 saves in his fifth career start.

"Our goaltender was real good and we found a way to win a game," said Carolina head coach Paul Maurice. "It wasn't pretty. We had some guys down, some guys injured, and some guys fatigued after last night, but it was good that we got the win."

The 'Canes remained eight points behind Boston for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jordan Staal, Bill Guerin and Matt Cooke provided the offense for Pittsburgh, which had a four-game winning streak snapped but picked up at least a point in its ninth straight game (5-0-4). The Penguins did increase their lead to four points over New Jersey for first place in the Atlantic Division.

Pittsburgh visits the Devils on Friday.

Brent Johnson allowed four goals on 21 shots to take the loss.

"I think that the team we played tonight has proven all year long that they are not going to stop playing. They are going to work regardless of the standings," said Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma.

Jordan Staal beat Peters with a wrist shot to open the scoring 64 seconds into the contest, then Guerin, who was back in the lineup after missing the past three games due to back spasms, jammed home a rebound for a power-play tally at 5:29 of the first period.

Carolina then scored three unanswered goals to grab the lead. Whitney and Zach Boychuk lit the lamp 1:26 apart to tie the game in the first.

Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar headed to the penalty box for boarding moments after Guerin gave Pittsburgh a two-goal advantage. The Hurricanes needed only 10 seconds to convert as Whitney beat Johnson to the stick-side with a one-timer.

Carolina drew even when Boychuk reeled in a loose puck off a neutral-zone faceoff and flipped a backhander from the high slot past the blocker of Johnson at 9:11.

The older Staal brother snuck a shot from the side of the net behind Johnson at 2:09 of the second period.

Cooke pumped in the equalizer at the six-minute mark of the middle stanza after some nice work cycling the puck. Cooke has been under scrutiny for Sunday's blindside hit that left Boston forward Marc Savard concussed. The NHL on Wednesday decided not to suspend him.
