Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Gilbert Brule netted the deciding goal in the shootout, as the Edmonton Oilers edged the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, at Rexall Place.

The Oilers were less than a second away from a regulation win, but Detroit defenseman Brian Rafalski scored to send the game to overtime. The game reached a conclusion in the shootout following a lethargic extra frame that featured few quality scoring chances.

Edmonton center Ryan Potulny beat Calder Trophy candidate Jimmy Howard to begin the shootout, and Brule tickled the twine after Red Wings slick forward Pavel Datsyuk caught iron. Detroit's Jason Williams scored on a backhand in the second round before Edmonton rookie goaltender Devan Dubnyk turned away Valtteri Filppula to record his first NHL win in his 14th career game.

"I'm gonna have to sit down for a bit after that one," said Dubnyk. "I just tried to not flinch or sit back and stay level-headed. The guys scored some nice goals for me so it helped."

Andrew Cogliano and Ryan Whitney both tallied in the first period for Edmonton, which snapped a five-game winless streak. Dubnyk finished with 31 saves, 16 coming in the third period.

Patrick Eaves had the other goal for the Red Wings, who had won their last three games. Howard stopped 22 shots.

Detroit fell into a tie with Calgary for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Cogliano scored 57 seconds after the game's opening faceoff, then Whitney lit the lamp at 4:58.

Eaves beat Dubnyk through the five-hole to trim the deficit in half at 11:51 mark of the middle stanza before Rafalski tied it off a scramble in front.
