Final Score: NY Islanders 4 - Anaheim 5
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Saku Koivu scored 14 seconds into overtime as the Anaheim Ducks rallied from a two-goal deficit to take a 5-4 win over the New York Islanders at Honda Center.
In the extra session, Bruno Gervais tried to force a pass that Koivu picked off, skated into the New York zone and snapped a wrister into the left corner of the net.
Lubomir Visnovsky scored twice, including the tying goal with 32 seconds left in regulation, while Jason Blake and Matt Beleskey each lit the lamp for the Ducks, who have won three straight but still sit seven points back of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
"We need every point," said Visnovsky. "The last three games we've won have been great for the team. We have confidence. Tonight was a crazy game. For me, every puck was bouncing off my stick and I was not very comfortable with the puck. But it doesn't matter because the team wins and everything is OK."
Jonas Hiller gave up three goals on 17 shots and was pulled halfway through the second period. Curtis McElhinney finished the game in net and stopped 13 shots to get the win.
"We had a great two games against top teams and today in the first half of the game, we were kind of waiting to see what would happen," said Koivu. "Then the third period was an amazing one from us. We fought through it to the end, got huge goals with less than a minute to go. This is the type of game we need right now. We will take these points any way right now."
Anaheim winger Teemu Selanne remains at 599 career goals. Should he get to 600, he will be the 18th player in NHL history to reach that mark and if he gets to 601, he will tie Jari Kurri for most goals ever by a Finland native. He did finish the game with two assists.
Kyle Okposo had two goals and John Tavares and Richard Park each had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who had a three-game winning streak snapped and are six points back of the Boston Bruins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Martin Biron made 34 stops in the loss.
"That is a big point for us," said Okposo. "We came out here hoping to get six points and we have a chance for five now. If you would have told us that, we would have taken it."
Trailing 4-2, Anaheim made it a one-goal game midway through the final stanza on Blake's deflection of a Steve Eminger shot on the power play.
Anaheim pulled McElhinney late in the game for the extra attacker and the move paid off as Visnovsky's one-timer from the right point found the back of the net through traffic with 32 seconds to play to force overtime.
"I knew he was shooting it, but all night they had a very good net presence," said Biron about the goal. "It just found a way through everybody. They played desperate in that third period. It's tough to give away points like that. We need the points too to try to make a push for it."
Park got the first goal of the game as he used good work in the deep left boards to get it out front and snapped home his own rebound halfway through the first frame to give New York a 1-0 lead.
Anaheim tied it just 22 seconds later as Beleskey buried a wrister from the slot during a rush.
Anaheim then took a 2-1 lead with 1:51 to play in the first period as Visnovsky's one-timer from the left circle sailed past Biron.
The Islanders, though, tied the game just 53 seconds later as Okposo made a nifty move to get around his defender, skated around the net and from the right side he threw it out front where it hit off a Duck and got in.
New York then took a 3-2 lead just 2:42 into the second on the power play as Okposo's wrister from the left circle went between the pads of Hiller with traffic in front. Anaheim switched goaltenders after the score.
The Islanders got their second power-play goal of the period with 5:29 left when Tavares' backhand shot from the slot snuck in.
