Final Score: Detroit 4 - Vancouver 3
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg found the back of the net with a backhander as time expired in overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at General Motors Place.
With the clock winding down in the extra session, Zetterberg had his back to the net as he made his way into the slot with a defender on him. Zetterberg then put a backhander off the inside of the right post and into the net for the thrilling win.
"I didn't know how much time was left, but it was enough," Zetterberg said.
Valtteri Filppula had a goal and two assists for the Red Wings, who went 2-0-1 on a three-game road trip and now sit two points ahead of idle Calgary for the eight and final playoff spot in the West.
Todd Bertuzzi and Pavel Datsyuk also scored for Detroit, which got 29 saves from Jimmy Howard.
Kyle Wellwood and Shane O'Brien each had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who went 3-1-1 on a five-game homestand and hold a six-point lead over idle Colorado for first in the Northwest Division.
Daniel Sedin also scored for Vancouver, which got 50 saves from Roberto Luongo.
"We fought hard and got a point," O'Brien said. "We played good but came up a little short."
Down 3-2 in the third, Sedin lit the lamp to tie the game. Kevin Bieksa's shot from the left circle deflected off the stick of a Detroit defender and went sailing high into the air. Sedin caught the disc with his glove at the side of the net before sliding the puck into the net.
Neither team scored in the remaining time left in regulation, sending the contest into overtime.
The Canucks got on the board 4:10 into the first period. Wellwood's one-timer from the right point beat traffic in front and went through the legs of Howard.
O'Brien's snap shot from the left point found the back of the net with 6:22 left to make it a 2-0 contest.
However, Detroit scored three times in the middle stanza to take the lead. Bertuzzi got things started at the 12:34 mark by jamming home a loose puck. Just five seconds later, Datsyuk fired a wrister from the point to deadlock the game at 2-2.
Filppula's short-handed goal with 2:21 remaining gave the Red Wings a 3-2 edge. Filppula charged down the ice on a breakaway and beat Luongo with a backhander.
