Final Score: NY Islanders 0 - Los Angeles 1
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Quick made 26 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, and the Los Angeles Kings avoided their first three- game losing streak in over two months with a 1-0 win over the New York Islanders.
Quick recorded his eighth career whitewash, as the Kings won for only the third time in eight games. Los Angeles now stands tied for fifth in the West with Nashville, which also won on Saturday.
"There are things that do not end up on a score sheet but are invaluable to a team," Quick said. "I think it was a great game, a great third period. Having the lead and not giving it up, and the way we played, the way we killed penalties gives the team a little boost of confidence after these past two games."
Brad Richardson posted the only goal of the game to give Los Angeles its fifth consecutive win over the Isles.
Dwayne Roloson made 25 saves for New York, which has lost two straight following a three-game win streak. The Islanders are six points behind Boston for the East's final playoff spot.
"We had some chances. You have to give Jonathan Quick a lot of credit," Roloson said. "He played very well at the other end. It's tough on back-to- back games. We came out sluggish and the first period we didn't generate that many opportunities. Every good shot we had, Jonathan made a great save."
Los Angeles notched the contest's only tally with 6:25 left in the first. Wayne Simmonds picked up a loose puck behind the net and skated off to the left boards. He waited for an open man and found Richardson in the slot. Richardson waited for an opportunity to fire it before wristing a shot past Roloson.
Meanwhile, Quick needed to make only five saves to keep the Isles off the board in the opening 20 minutes. He was a tested a bit more in the second, turning away 12 shots to maintain the Kings' advantage.
New York, which failed on all four of its power play opportunities, had a pair of good chances in the closing minutes of the third. Blake Comeau nearly tied it with a wraparound chance with just under five minutes to go, but Quick was there for the pad stop.
Then, with an extra skater on for the visitors, Kyle Okposo had a chance with 10 seconds remaining; however, Quick was able to close his right arm to his body before the disc snuck through to prevent a goal.
