Final Score: Atlanta 3 - Philadelphia 1
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Ondrej Pavelec stopped 44-of-45 shots as Atlanta slipped past Philadelphia, 3-1, to sweep the weekend home-and-home set at Wachovia Center.
Ron Hainsey posted a goal and two assists for the Thrashers, who have won four straight games -- including a 5-2 decision over Philly on Saturday -- and moved within a point of Boston for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.
Todd White and Rich Peverley also tallied for Atlanta, which recorded its first-ever season series sweep over Philadelphia in 11 NHL campaigns.
"Last night we outplayed them clearly, but tonight it could have gone either way," said Atlanta head coach John Anderson. "Pavelec played so well for us though. We wanted to get off to a quick start, which is what we've done lately. I thought we controlled the play right from the start and put them on their heels."
Mike Richards tallied the only goal for the Flyers, who have dropped four of their last five games. Brian Boucher made 28 saves in the loss, his sixth in seven starts.
Richards finally hit the back of the net with 8:04 left in regulation, redirecting a Matt Carle feed from behind the Atlanta cage, but despite several more close calls, the Thrashers picked up the crucial next score.
Peverley took a lead pass from Hainsey, streaked down the left wing and ripped a wrister low to the short side with 3:07 to play for a two-goal difference.
Boucher was pulled for an extra attacker with 1:56 remaining but the home team couldn't shrink the deficit further.
"They are a skilled team, they can score a lot of goals. We knew that we had to play tighter defense tonight because they were desperate and they played that way," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette of the Thrashers.
Hainsey's quick wrister in the slot put Atlanta on the board 2:04 into the contest, then White made it 2-0 at 11:01.
Pavelec made 16 stops in the first period, but few were challenging or from close range.
The Flyers unloaded 19 more shots on Pavelec in the second period, but he was tested more often -- including a late-period power play where he was forced to make two sprawling saves in the crease.
