Final Score: Ottawa 2 - Montreal 0
Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Brian Elliott posted 29 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Ottawa Senators took a 2-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
In a battle between two of the three teams tied for the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference, Ottawa moved two points ahead of Montreal and Philadelphia for sole possession of the fifth position. Ottawa plays in Philly on Tuesday.
Erik Karlsson had a goal and an assist while Peter Regin also lit the lamp for the Senators, who snapped a five-game slide. Daniel Alfredsson had two assists in the game.
"I haven't played a playoff game yet, but this was definitely how we looked at it coming in," said Elliott. "That's a huge game point-wise and in the standings. We needed to get back on track and having a win tonight gets us back to the way we should be playing."
Jaroslav Halak made 25 stops for the Canadiens, who have dropped two straight after winning their previous six.
"We came flat in the first period," said Montreal forward Brian Gionta. "We've got to find a way to do a better job of getting better chances, which we didn't do tonight. We have to have a good effort in the last nine games to assure ourselves of that playoff spot."
The first goal of the game came at the 10:15 mark of the first period when Karlsson threw a shot on net from a sharp angle at the right side that Regin tipped in.
Elliot, who stopped six shots in the first period, turned aside 13 in the second to preserve the one-goal game. Halak kept his team in the game by stopping 11 shots in the second.
A penalty to Dominic Moore 7:34 into the third for hooking gave Ottawa a power play which it took advantage of. Karlsson was again in on the action as his wrister from the high slot found its way through a screened Halak at the 8:17 mark.
Elliott made 10 stops in the third to preserve the shutout.
