Final Score: Los Angeles 3 - Colorado 4
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Chris Stewart's shootout goal lifted the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 win over Los Angeles in the finale of a home-and- home series at Pepsi Center.
Colorado forward Peter Mueller and Los Angeles defenseman Jack Johnson both tallied after a scoreless first round in the shootout. Stewart then snapped a shot through the legs of Erik Ersberg before winger Ryan Smyth rang a shot off the post, sealing the Kings' fate.
Milan Hejduk and Paul Stastny each scored a power-play goal for Colorado, which snapped a three-game winless streak and remained two points ahead of eighth-place Detroit in the Western Conference standings. The Red Wings beat St. Louis earlier Wednesday.
Anderson finished with 27 saves.
Power-play goals from Drew Doughty and Alexander Frolov erased a two-goal deficit in the third period for Los Angeles, the latter marker coming with just 1:21 left in regulation on a redirection.
Ersberg stopped 14 shots in relief of starter Jonathan Quick, who was pulled after allowing three goals on 16 shots in the first 18-plus minutes of the game.
The Kings are fifth in the West with 90 points, one more than Colorado and Nashville.
Doughty, who potted the overtime winner Monday in Los Angeles, fired a wrister through heavy traffic past Anderson 40 seconds into the third.
The Kings continued to press, forcing Colorado defenseman Brett Clark to take a holding penalty with just under three minutes to play. It became a 6-on-4 advantage as Ersberg went to the bench for an extra attacker. Frolov was standing in the low slot and got a piece of Jarret Stoll's slap shot to draw Los Angeles even.
"It took us a little longer than we anticipated, but we came back and that was a huge point for us," said Kings forward Anze Kopitar.
Colorado struck first on a friendly carom 7:38 into the contest. Matt Hendricks picked up a loose puck behind the enemy cage, skated around the far post and threw the disc into the middle of the ice. Ryan O'Reilly was driving to the net and the centering feed deflected off Johnson's skate.
Kopitar scored midway through the opening frame before Hejduk beat Quick on the short side with a one-timer from the left circle at 13:21. Colorado led 3-1 on another fortuitous bounce as Stastny put a puck in off Doughty with 1:52 remaining in the first.
"We did a great job on the power play, especially at the start of the game," Anderson said. "But we've got to finish. We had a chance to bury them, but (Ersberg) gave them the momentum."
