Final Score: Montreal 2 - Buffalo 3
Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek each scored in the shootout for Buffalo, as the Sabres rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at HSBC Arena.
Pominville got the shootout going with a snap shot that went through the legs of Carey Price. Andrei Kostitsyn failed to score on a wrist shot for the Canadiens. After a scoreless second round, Vanek sealed Buffalo's come-from- behind win with a snap shot off the inside of the left post.
"It was an ugly game but we'll take the two points," Vanek said. "I think we all know that we can be better, and we will be better."
Paul Gaustad and Tim Connolly scored in the third period for the Sabres, who have won four in a row and now own a seven-point edge over idle Ottawa for first in the Northeast Division. Buffalo welcomes the Senators to town on Friday.
Ryan Miller made 26 saves for Buffalo, which is seeking its first Northeast crown since 2007. The Sabres sit third in the East with 90 points, one behind the Penguins, who lost 4-3 in a shootout to the East-leading Capitals on Wednesday.
Kostitsyn scored twice for the Canadiens, who have dropped three straight following a six-game winning streak. Price turned aside 40-of-42 shots in defeat.
Down 2-0 in the third, the Sabres went on the power play when Ryan O'Byrne was called for high-sticking with 3:33 remaining. Buffalo pulled Miller moments later to gain a two-man advantage.
Connolly found the back of the net with 1:59 left to cut the gap to 2-1. Derek Roy's slapper from the right circle hit off a Montreal player in front. Connolly was right there to chip the disc into the net.
With Miller still on the bench, Gaustad lit the lamp with 48 seconds remaining to even the score. A shot from the point led to a scramble in front of Price. Gaustad won the battle and put the puck into the back of the net.
Buffalo went on the power play 38 seconds into the extra session due to Andrei Markov's interference penalty. But Montreal's defense held strong, and the contest went to a shootout.
Kostitsyn's goal 41 seconds into the game put the Canadiens ahead early. Tomas Plekanec came out from behind the cage and slid a pass to Kostitsyn, whose wrister found the upper left corner of the net.
Kostitsyn then scored a power-play goal at the 4:57 mark of the second to make it 2-0. Kostitsyn fired a snap shot from the left circle that went through the legs of Miller.
Price made 10 saves in the first and 14 in the second.
