Final Score: Los Angeles 1 - St. Louis 3
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Paul Kariya notched a goal and an assist, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Scottrade Center.
B.J. Crombeen and T.J. Oshie also tallied for St. Louis, which badly needed the win to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. The Blues snapped a two-game skid to move within eight points of idle Detroit for the final postseason spot in the West with eight games to play.
Chris Mason stopped 30-of-31 shots to pick up the victory.
"You never know, we're definitely far from the situation we'd like to be in but we are where we are (and) we're not going to give up," Mason said of the Blues' prospects at making the postseason.
Dustin Brown scored the lone goal for the Kings, who have lost four of six and fell one point behind Nashville for fifth place in the conference. The Predators defeated Phoenix, 4-3, in a shootout Thursday.
Jonathan Quick made 23 saves in defeat.
Crombeen got the scoring started after a Kings defenseman couldn't handle the puck at the point. Crombeen beat his man to the disc and skated in 2-on-1, ripping a wrist shot past Quick 3:57 into the first period.
Mason made six stops in the opening frame to keep LA off the board, and St. Louis doubled its lead 1:06 into the second on Oshie's tally. Keith Tkachuk forced a turnover in the Blues' zone and dished it to Kariya, who skated up the ice and fired a shot on net. Quick couldn't corral the rebound, and Oshie was right there to fire it into the net.
Brown finally got the Kings on the board with a power play tally in the third, backhanding a shot over Mason's glove from the slot with 15:22 to play.
"They get a quick goal in the second and now we're down in a hole. We've been doing it a lot this season but it's tough to come from behind every game," Brown said.
A fluke goal, though, all but sealed the win for the Blues. With six minutes to play, Kariya's shot snuck underneath Quick's pads but not into the net. Kings defenseman Randy Jones accidentally tipped the puck with his skate and into the net before he could keep it from crossing the line.
Los Angeles was unable to solve Mason down the stretch.
